The installation of freenas is very simple and only a few configurations have to be done.

Installation of FreeNAS

Download the FreeNAS ISO and install it on your server: http://www.freenas.org/download-freenas-release/

Configuration of FreeNAS

A few steps are required to use FreeNAS. First, login into the FreeNAS Web Panel which is reachable over http://SERVER-IP
The username is 'root' and the password has been setted during the installation.

Click on the left menu on Services → Control Services to open the service management page.


FTP Configuration

Click on the wrench icon at FTP and set the following values:

  • Clients: 100
  • Connections: 1000
  • Always Chroot: On

Click on "Ok" to save the changes and activate the service using the "Start now" button.


NFS Configuration

Click on the wrench icon at NFS and set the following values:

  • Allow non-root mount: On
  • Number of servers: 16

Click on "Ok" to save the changes and activate the service using the "Start now" button.


SMB (Samba) Configuration

Click on the wrench icon at SMB and set the following values:

  • NetBIOS name: Change to your company name
  • Workgroup: Change to your company name
  • Description: Change to your company name
  • Local Master: On
  • Time Server for Domain: On
  • Unix Extensions: On
  • Zeroconf share discovery: On
  • Allow execute always: On
  • Obey pam restrictions: On

Click on "Ok" to save the changes and activate the service using the "Start now" button.


SSH Configuration

No changes are required. Simply activate the service using the "Start now" button, if it is not started already.
